Privacy policy

This policy describes how and why BLA uses personal information, how we protect privacy when doing so, and rights and choices regarding this information. We promise to respect personal information which is under our control and to keep it safe. We aim to be clear when we collect information and about what we will do with it.

This policy is effective from 25th May 2018.

If you have any comments on this privacy policy, please email them to enquiries@britishlaryngological.org

The British Laryngological Association (BLA) is a membership society which aims to achieve advancement in laryngology for the benefit of the public through research, education and training, so we use personal information on a day to day basis in order to operate. Our use of personal information allows us to disseminate the highest quality education, standards and research information around all medical, surgical and rehabilitative aspects of laryngology.

The BLA is registered as a charity (1151517) in England and Wales whose registered office is at 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE, United Kingdom.

We collect information in the following ways:

Information provided directly:
Information may be given in order to sign up for membership, to receive our newsletter, or as part of delegate registration at one of our events.

Information provided indirectly:
Information may be sent to us by third parties, for example from approved course organisers. Please check any privacy policy provided when your data is given to us by a third party.

We will use your personal information to:

  • handle member requests and/or enquiries
  • provide services, products or information requested
  • maintain our records for administrative purposes
  • respond to or fulfil any requests, complaints or queries
  • understand how we can improve our services, products or information by conducting analysis and market research
  • manage our events
  • send correspondence and communicate
  • provide information about other services we offer that are similar to those that may have already been purchased or enquired about, and to send information that we believe may be of interest to you.

If you don’t want to be contacted with further information on the work of the British Laryngological Association including our news and events or receive mailings from corporate and other organisations, please email enquiries@britishlaryngological.org.

And if you don’t want us to use your personal data for any of the other reasons set out in this section, you can let us know at any time by contacting us at enquiries@britishlaryngological.org and we will delete your data from our systems.

Marketing communications

Our marketing communications include information about education and research on laryngology, including our events and updates about what BLA is doing. Occasionally, we may include information from partner organisations or organisations who support us in these communications.  We are working to operate an ‘opt-in only’ communication policy. This means that, except as set out below, we will only send marketing communications to those that have explicitly stated that they are happy for us to do so.

We may use information that members have given us directly, for example the record of the relationship with us, location and demographics, as well as the type of activity that a particular member has been involved with, to tailor our communications about future activities.

Sharing your information with other organisations

We will never sell or rent your information to third parties for marketing purposes. However we may disclose your information to third parties in connection with the other purposes set out in this policy. These third parties may include: suppliers and sub-contractors who may process information on our behalf, and IT service providers.

Where we are under a legal or regulatory duty to do so, we may disclose your details to the police, regulatory bodies or legal advisors, and/or, where we consider this necessary, to protect the rights, property or safety of the BLA, its personnel, visitors, users or others.

Managing your contact preferences

We make it easy for you to tell us how you want us to communicate, in a way that suits you. Our forms have clear marketing preference questions and we include information on how to opt out when we send you marketing. If you don’t want to hear from us, that’s fine, and you can change your preferences at any time.  Just let us know when you provide your data or contact us by emailing us at enquiries@britishlaryngological.org

If you’ve decided you don’t want to be contacted for marketing purposes, we may still need to contact you for administrative purposes.

Changes to privacy policy

If we change our Privacy Policy, we will post the changes on this page, and may also email our members.
