CLOSING REMARKS

Kate Heathcote

University Hospitals Dorset

The purpose of this course is to give an understanding of the indications and techniques involved with laryngeal reinnervation in children. As such it is useful to all those who may come across children with laryngeal palsy in their clinical practice.

We have assembled a team of dedicated clinicians who have a passion for the particular issues that face these children and a desire to teach and thus disseminate these techniques.

We will take you through how to assess potential candidates by describing techniques of nasendoscopy and ultrasound and then progress to microlaryngoscopy and laryngeal electromyography. Injection augmentation is described and debated and the technique of non-selective laryngeal reinnervation for the treatment of unilateral vocal fold palsy is explained.

We will also cover bilateral selective reinnervation and when this may be appropriate in cases of bilateral vocal fold palsy.

We will have time to discuss these techniques in depth with the panel who have a wide range of experiences in the management of these children.
